Rethinking Democracy from the School in the Artificial Intelligence Era: Data, Power, and Citizenship
Keywords:
democratic education, artificial intelligence, digital citizenship, professional judgment, philosophy of data, critical literacyAbstract
In the context of hyper-accelerated digitalization, this essay examines how artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming the relationship between education and democracy. Through a case-study analysis in countries such as Chile, Colombia, and Spain, it argues that AI applied to education is not neutral but embodies political and ethical decisions that reconfigure school practices and forms of citizenship. In the face of the contemporary digital power structure, drawing on Ferraris' philosophy of New Realism, Floridi’s philosophy of information, Feenberg's critical theory of technology, and emancipatory pedagogies, it argues for the need to develop a “data citizenship” and a critical literacy in AI that go beyond technical competencies in data usage. This includes capacities for judgment, dialogue, and democratic deliberation within the educational community. The essay proposes that, faced with the automation of meaning promoted by algorithmic systems, it is necessary to promote critical and professional judgment as a form of freedom and to subordinate educational technology to pedagogical and democratic ends. It concludes that the future of democracy depends on our ability to dispute the meaning of AI and transform schools into laboratories of humanity, where forms of common life based on critical deliberation and collective responsibility are rehearsed.
